TimeWiseVA – Hints and Tips – MS Excel Freeze Column and Row Headings

Does it really annoy you, when you are working with spreadsheets, that you need to keep scrolling up and down to see the Column and/or Row headings?

These simple steps will ensure that they are visible no matter how far down or across you scroll.

Microsoft Excel 2007 dependent on what information you need to see when scrolling, below are three alternatives

  1. To freeze the top row only ensure that you are in column A row 2 cell – click on the ‘Review tab’ and Window section. Click on ‘Freeze Pains’ (which brings up a drop down box) and click on ‘Freeze top row’. So now when you scroll down you will always be able to see the headings on the first row.
  2. To freeze the top row and first column ensure that you are in Column B row 2 cell again click on the ‘Review Tab’ and Window section. Click on ‘Freeze Pains’ (which brings up a drop down box) and click on ‘Freeze Pains’. So now when you scroll down and across you will always be able to see the headings in the first row and information in the first column.
  3. To freeze the first column only ensure that you are in Column B row 1 cell – again click on the ‘Review Tab’ and Window section. Click on ‘Freeze Pains’ (which brings up a drop down box) and click on ‘Freeze First Column’. So now when you scroll down and across you will always be able to see the formation in the first column.
